Chincoteague
November 23-25, 2007

The weekend after Thanksgiving, we travelled with our good friends the Ericksons to Chincoteague. This is a small island on the Atlantic Coast of Virginia, a few miles south of the Maryland state line (map). It and neighboring Assateague Island are famous for the wild ponies that live there, and as a scenic "getaway" resort. Much of the land is federally protected as a National Seashore and/or National Wildlife Refuge.

Bruce and Ben climbed 175 steps, up to the top of Assateague Lighthouse (left).

(Left) I liked this image so much that I made it my desktop "wallpaper" on my computer at work. If you like, you can click on it to download the full-resolution version.

Walking along the seashore, Ben had lots of fun with his binoculars!

Chris enjoyed the Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in Chincoteague.

A Sunday morning nature walk.

Chris needed a little help from Clipper when the nature walk got too long!

On our way out, we stopped at the Visitor Center for the nearby NASA Wallops Flight Facility.
